Confessions of a Self-Proclaimed Taco-holic!!

I have a little secret, a confession if you will….

The funny thing is some of my favorite people do too.  I am not going to completely expose all of them, just one or two.  You see I may have a problem.  Well maybe not so much of a problem as an issue.  Really though it’s not THAT bad so instead of a problem or issue really what is going on is I have a concern.  Or is it?  No, it’s a confession of an ongoing obsession.

I am a self-proclaimed Taco-holic!  I love tacos in all of their incarnations; soft, crunchy, beef, chicken, fish, veggie, shrimp, street tacos, tacos al carbon, pulled pork, cabrito, breakfast, lunch AND dinner.  My all time favorite, crunchy for sure!

You get the idea!  Name it “Taco”, wrap it in a tortilla (corn or flour) or scoop it into a crunchy shell add guacamole, salsa or pico de gallo and I am down!

My mom would make tacos for dinner many Tuesday nights when I was little.  My dad had lodge meetings on Tuesday night, and this was our girl’s night for me mom and my sister, Taco Tuesday before that was a thing.  Her version was McCormick’s Taco Mix to a pound of ground beef, broken up Doritos, lettuce, tomatoes and salsa if she could find it (this was the 60’s y’all).  That is where my obsession began.

Then my taco focus moved to the favorite Tex-Mex establishment down the street from our house.  Crunchy corn tortilla cups that when flipped over doubled as chile con queso domes.  As a taco they were filled with deliciously seasoned ground beef topped with shredded cheese, shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoes; guacamole on the side.

When I got to high school, I discovered fast food tacos.  There were a number of options in the neighborhood, but Jack In The Box Tacos sang my siren song.  If you have been living under a rock for the past 40 or so years and are uninitiated in their deliciousness, they are the perfect deep-fried combo of hot, crunchy and soft, beef filled goodness served with hot sauce; also known as a cayenne vinegar happiness in a packet.  They have not changed at all since I found them a very long time ago and I hope they never do!

Jack In The Box order of regular tacos. Now you see them…..

There was a Jack in the Box on the way home from school and I drove through at least two afternoons a week to buy 2 tacos for under a $1.00.  I was usually starving after practice and would have eaten both before I pulled in the driveway. that was a little over a half-mile away (wrong for so many reasons but that is another discussion).

I don’t think I ever confessed this private love affair with anyone until a few years ago.  I begged my husband to please drive through JITB for an order of tacos on our way out of town or it was quite possible I was not going to be a good travel companion.  Wise man that he is, he made the pit stop and I was out of the fast-food shame closet!  Turns out he loves them too!

Now you don’t. Two down!!

I shared this tidbit with my sister, who is easily the cleanest and most selective eater on the planet.  Low and behold if she didn’t have a confession for me too!!  Now, I get phone calls when she is on the road for work asking me to help her find the nearest JITB for a taco fix.  If I want to torture her or get her attention, I will drive through, buy an order and take a photo of them in the wrappers sitting in the cup holders of my car and send it just to taunt her.  Or worse take a bite and then a photo. No text, just a photo.  Yes, I am the evil sister, she is usually the nice one!!

I have also discovered that Jack In The Box Tacos has even become a reason to gather…..  There is a family among our closest circle of friends that we discovered one evening had a similar obsession and the end result is a couple of times a year we will go pick up a ridiculous number of tacos, throw in some egg rolls (best ever) and a few burgers, cut everything up to bite-size, plate them beautifully and eat them as appetizers while we laugh, giggle and catch up. The kids are there too even the picky eaters!

Our favorite fast food appetizers…Don’t judge until you try it!!.

Guilt-free, out of the fast-food shame closet!!

So, do you have a guilty pleasure you would like to share?  Is it tacos?  Please let it be tacos!!  If it’s not, that’s ok just click below and let’s talk about what you love and hide from the world.  It’s just us.  I promise I won’t tell anyone….
